Modesto Takes Early Lead, Beats Lancaster 10-5
JetHawks stymied in bid for third straight win

(MODESTO, CA) – The JetHawks scored first, but it wasn’t enough to last Tuesday night in Modesto. After Lancaster plated a pair of runs in the opening frame, the Nuts answered for five in the bottom of the first, then chased JetHawks starter Kyle Greenwalt in the third inning as they beat the JetHawks 10-5. Lancaster was trying to get three straight wins for the first time since early May.

An early lead gave the JetHawks confidence. With one out in the first inning, Albert Cartwright and Brandon Barnes recorded back-to-back doubles to put Lancaster on top. An out later Freddy Parejo drove in Barnes with a single and the JetHawks were up 2-0.

The lead didn’t last. JetHawks starter Kyle Greenwalt struggled in the opening frame, giving up five hits, a walk, and a hit batter, totaling up to five runs. The Nuts added another in the second and two in the third to knock out Greenwalt. It is the fifth time in six starts in the second half that the JetHawks starting pitcher has been unable to get through the fourth inning.

Reliever Leandro Cespedes restored order, allowing only two runs over the final five and 1/3 innings, but the hole was too big for the JetHawks to recover. Parejo finished the game with three hits and Albert Cartwright with two. The JetHawks also matched a season-high by walking seven times.

The JetHawks and Nuts will conclude the series Wednesday morning in Modesto. David Duncan (0-2) will pitch for the JetHawks against the Nuts’ Juan Nicasio (6-4). The game begins at 11:05 AM. The game will be broadcast starting with the Pre-Game Show at 11:00 AM on CSN@JetHawks.com.
